Energy Advice Surgery

Wychavon District Council are running a free Energy Advice Surgery offering practical help with reducing your bills, tips on heating your home and grants for insulation.

Wychavon District Council are running a Free Energy Advice Surgery on 5th October at Pershore Library, Church Street, Pershore WR10 1DT. It runs from 1.30pm-4.30pm. They’re asking attendees to bring in recent energy bills. Along with tips to heat your home and reduce your bills there will be advice on grants available for insulation, preventing mould and condensation, smart meters and switching energy providers. Energy Efficiency is “using less energy to provide the same service” which can not only save you money on your energy bill but can also reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses going out into the atmosphere. These simple steps will help your home be energy efficient:

• Avoid putting sofas in front of radiators.

• Leave the oven door open after cooking to let the heat warm your kitchen.

• Turn off radiators in rooms that aren’t in use.

• Turning your thermostat down by 1°C can save you as much as £60 per year. Also, keeping your heating on constantly on a low heat could potentially save you more money than switching it on and off for blasts of heat. 

• Where possible wash clothes at a lower temperature.

• Dry clothes on a line to avoid using the tumble drier.

• Using the dishwasher can be more energy efficient than washing by hand but ensure you have a full load.

• Try to keep your shower time to around ten minutes.  

• Turn the pressure down on a power shower.  

• Don’t leave electrical appliances on standby - switch them off.

• Install energy-saving LED lightbulbs. They last 10 times longer than ordinary bulbs and can save around £50 over the lifetime of the bulb, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

• Keep your fridge and freezer as full as possible.  Empty space in your fridge or freezer wastes not only space but energy too. 

• When cooking pasta or rice, use the kettle to boil water instead of heating it in a pan on the stove.  Transfer the boiling water into your pan for cooking and use a lid on the saucepan.

• When making a cup of tea or coffee, only boil the water you need.

• Where possible, cook food in the microwave, rather than in an electric oven.

• If you're going to use the oven, bake a few meals at a time to get the most out of having your oven on.

• When using your cooker hob use a pan size equal to the ring size. Don’t heat a small meal up in a big pan and use the sauce-pan lid.

• Use draught excluding foam or rubber tape around your doors.

• Fit internal letter box plates to exclude draughts.

• Draw curtains at night.

• Finally, get cosy! Wearing more jumpers, socks and slippers around the house, and putting an extra blanket on the bed means you won't be tempted to turn the heating up!
