Stanley Baldwin Commemoration

Stanley Baldwin, later 1st Earl Baldwin of Bewdley, was born in Bewdley, Worcestershire and next year it will be the 150th anniversary of his birth.  He was a British politician, Leader of the Conservative party for 14 years and three times Prime Minister between 1923 and 1937; he headed the Government during the General Strike of 1926, the Ethiopian crisis of 1935, and the abdication crisis of 1936.  He is considered to be one of the outstanding peacetime Prime Ministers of the 20th century and perhaps, along with Elgar, Worcestershire’s most famous son.

Stanley Baldwin lived at Astley Hall, near Stourport-on-Severn and had gained considerable business experience from Baldwins Limited at Wilden, an iron and steel firm, which at their height employed some 4000 people.  He was a staunch “One Nation” Conservative which won him widespread support across both political and social divides.  He was a generous man and among his acts of kindness was an anonymous donation from part of his fortune to help reduce the National Debt.  His ashes were laid to rest in the nave of Worcester Cathedral.

It is intended to unveil a full-scale bronze of Stanley Baldwin in Load Street, Bewdley in autumn 2017.  The statue has been commissioned from well-known sculptor, Martin Jennings who’s renowned for his figure of Sir John Betjeman at St. Pancras Station in London.
An Appeal Committee has been set up to help raise the considerable £150K required to fund the project.  Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Theresa May MP, has agreed to be top patron.

Among other patrons are Lord Cormack, who is organising a reception in the House of Lords, The Viscount Cobham and Lord Heseltine.  Also included are descendants of Stanley Baldwin, the present Earl Baldwin of Bewdley, Lord Russell of Liverpool, Sir Alan Munro and Sir John Miles Huntington-Whiteley.  Bea Grant, Mrs. Andrew Grant, is the daughter of Sir John Miles Huntington-Whiteley and therefore great-granddaughter of Stanley Baldwin.
