Tenbury Wells - The Mistletoe Capital of Britain

Tenbury Wells, lies alongside the River Teme where the three counties of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire meet.  The market town is widely acknowledged to be "the mistletoe capital of Britain". Mistletoe auctions have been held in Tenbury Wells for more than 100 years.
Mistletoe, Viscum album, is a parastic plant which lives off the nutrients and water from a host tree.  The most common host tree in the UK is apple, but it can also be found on poplar and lime trees. It is mainly found in the south and West Midlands but is particularly abundant in Herefordshire.  There are many orchard areas elsewhere in Britain but they don’t have mistletoe.  It is thought the main reason is climate as mistletoe thrives in areas with cold winter temperatures and warm summer ones. Mistletoe auctions have been held here for more than 100 years.
Mistletoe has been brought into homes in the depths of winter for thousands of years.  For the Romans, it represented peace, love and understanding and was hung over doorways to protect the household.  The Celts and Druids adopted it as a fertility symbol which is probably where the tradition of kissing underneath mistletoe stems from.
Buyers have travelled from to purchase mistletoe from Tenbury’s annual auctions. The mistletoe from this year’s sales will now be gracing homes all over the country.
